Perfect Tripod is a show created by comedy trio Tripod (Simon Hall - aka Yon, Scott Edgar and Steven Gates) and actor-singer Eddie Perfect, who master vocal renditions of iconic Australian pop and rock anthems.

They collaborated with Wally De Backer in "Quasimodo's Dream", originally by The Reels; a song that surely will give you goosebumps. Such is the perfect match between Perfect Tripod and Wally De Backer's voices.

Tripod's Yon was kind enough to provide us with the lovely (and tongue-in-cheek) words that follow about how they met Wally De Backer and how their collaboration saw the light.

Tripod were doing an Australia Day concert a few years back and Wally, both as Gotye and as one of The Basics, was also playing. Wally was playing the drums for both of these sets, and I was blown away with his singing. Sure it's always impressive when someone can sing and play drums - I can barely sing and clap at the same time - but to be able to sing LIKE THAT and play drums? He's an actual freak.  We were instant fans. We hung out after and since then we've bumped into each other at various out-of-town locations.

Last year Tripod recorded a song called The Blueprint, a tender ballad about a couple who plan to move into the inner city, start a family and close down all the music venues. I think maybe because of that song we'd been talking to the SLAM (Save Live Australian Music) folk about getting involved in the cause in some way. Also that year we'd been working with Eddie Perfect on Perfect Tripod Australian Songs, a concert of Australian tunes, a real a cappella onslaught.  It was a painstaking, note-by-note process. Eddie brought in a lovely arrangement of Wally's Heart's a Mess, one of the few songs we started out with that made it all the way to the Perfect Tripod album.

Wally was still the busiest man in showbiz, so Tripod and Eddie knocked up a demo for him to sing over. He sent back a file of him singing along with our parts into his computer and it already sounded awesome.

The record day was pretty intense, since we were still locking down the arrangement whilst trying to sound good. Wally did take after take, singing its arse off every time, looking for the tone he wanted. We left that day hoping we'd put down something good, but it wasn't until we heard the final mix, some time later, that we knew it sounded bloody awesome. Props to Lachlan Carrick for pulling it all together in the mix.

Wally had also been talking to the SLAM folk, and when he came to the Sydney Opera House in January to see the Tripod show where we performed The Blueprint, we got talking afterwards about him doing something with Tripod and Eddie to raise awareness for the cause.

The monumentalness (is that a word?) of the Grammys happened and we kind of thought well, if this idea goes away it'll be fair enough, what with Wally getting booked to guest on the Muppets, Sonny and Cher and the Bing Crosby Christmas Special and all the other sort of stuff that tends to follow these things (I imagine). But I guess the Muppets et al hadn't called cos he made contact, up for the idea as ever.

We wanted to do an a capella cover of an iconic Australian song. It was between The Reels' "Quasimodo's Dream" and "Friday On My Mind" by the Easybeats. We eventually went with QD because it lends itself so well to a cappella; also, a lot of people don't know it. I think it slipped though the cracks of eighties-ness.
