Louis Spoils is the recording project of Jake Rush, a talented musician and songwriter whose debut, self-titled EP reveals a star-studded line-up of guest collaborations, among whom is his old friend Wally De Backer (Gotye). Wally plays drums on all five tracks of Louis Spoils, which you can listen to on his bandcamp.

"Diverse sounds, snappy arrangements and hooky songs. Louis Spoils is well worth checking out." - Wally De Backer

Jake Rush has been kind enough to share his early memories about meeting Wally and The Basics and what Wally has meant to him and his music.

Well, the first time I met Wally I was very drunk on 'Australia day' and I had been swimming in the bay wearing all my clothes.  I was on holiday at the time in Melbourne; my friend and I stumbled over the road to the Esplanade hotel in St Kilda.  We could hear this roaring vocal as we were coming down the stairs. Surely enough it was The Basics;  I remember they were playing 'Second Best'.  We watched the rest of the gig with jaws dropped, and briefly met them after.

It wasn't until they came to Brisbane later on, when I started helping them out driving them around, lending them instruments and giving them beds in my mother's house, that I really got to know them.

I remember the first night The Basics came back to stay. I pointed down the hall where they could sleep. The boys came back out and said 'Jake, there is a child sleeping in this room.'  I went in and dragged my 5-year-old brother out, and put him in my mum's room. He still tells kids at school that 'Got-ya' slept in my bed'.

When asked about what Wally has taught thim about recording music or the music industry during their time together, Jake affirms that Wally has taught him that you can record anywhere with a very simple set up, and spend your money on the mixing instead. Actually, you can go really far as an independent artist, as you always have the creative control then. And we are sure this will be the case for Louis Spoils.

I was in Tassie demoing the LOUIS SPOILS EP and asked Wally if he could recommend a session drummer to help me out. He very generously put his hand up to do it.  It was pretty exciting for me, as I was huge admirer of his work with Gotye and The Basics.

I headed up to Melbourne and stayed at Wally's place (where I heard very early stages of Making Mirrors) and I showed him my songs at his parents' barn.  When I first heard STIUTK, I thought 'this song is going to take over the world,' and it did. I may have had a small crush on Kimbra too.

The next day we went to SoundPark studios, and he absolutely nailed it. He was very patient with my musical direction.  A few years on, after much anxiety and procrastination from me, the EP was finished and released.

Louis Spoils is about to play 3 shows with The Basics in Melbourne, and I am pretty damn excited about it. From these live shows you can expect a diverse range of songs. I am putting together a band of killer musicians, they will make magic in your ear holes!!! Lots of heavy rhythm and thick harmonies.

And I would just like to say, not only is Wally a very kind and generous man, his music resonates with lots of people for a reason: it is fucking amazing and unique.
